Indoor Air Pollution – The Facts

    • More than half the world's population still burns wood, dung and other solid fuels in their homes.*
    • Each year smoke from cooking in poorly ventilated homes claims the lives of an estimated 1.5 million people in poor countries - that's a life lost every 20 seconds.*
    • In developing countries this makes Indoor Air Pollution the most lethal killer after malnutrition, unsafe sex and lack of safe water and sanitation.*
    • 59% of these deaths are women.*
    • Each energy-efficient stove installed will save approximately 1.5 tonnes of CO2 per year (www.climatecare.org
    • If we could convert 100% of the developing world's approximate 500 million stoves (click here)  to energy-efficient stoves, that would save 750 million tonnes of CO2 annually , more than the UK's total annual CO2 output (of 554 million tonnes) (click here), OR:
    •  The equivalent of taking 134 million cars off the road  (click here and here) (which is nearly equivalent to all passenger cars registered in the USA )
    • Each stove installed offsets the carbon footprint of a return flight from London to New York  (www.carbonfootprint.com)
