Jacob Mapaila, a 44-year-old grandfather who taught for 15 years, chanced upon a new calling one day in the 1990s when he watched women and children in his village in Limpopo struggling to haul heavy buckets of water from a communal tap back to their homes several kilometres away.   

With crucial financial support and invaluable business guidance from GroFin, Jacob and his wife are today running a thriving company – ‘Borameetse’, a name that combines an Afrikaans word with a Sesotho language word and means ‘drill for water’. The company drills bore holes deep underground and supplies homes, farms and even whole communities in rural South Africa with fresh water, pumps, tanks and pipes.                                                  

“I never could have imagined where I would be now when I think of the day I realised how difficult it was for people to get something as important as water,” said Jacob. “So much has changed for me because of the GroFin partnership…I was calling myself a businessman, but I wasn’t. Before Jacob teamed up with GroFin, he was relying on other companies to do the actual drilling for his customers. Jacob made a small commission this way, but sometimes the drilling companies he contracted let him down by delaying or even cancelling jobs. Something had to change.

“My destiny was not in my own hands,” Jacob said. “This is when the idea of buying my own drill so I wouldn’t have to rely on others came to me. I was making a little bit of money, but the companies I was working for were making a lot more,” he recalled.                                                                                  

Jacob began his career in the water industry by installing a few pipes in his home village. Since that humble beginning, Borameetse has quickly grown into a broad-ranging enterprise that locates water resources, drills the holes to access them, supplies and installs pumps, tanks and pipe fittings and also tests the water quality.

A 2001 census revealed that a staggering 500,000 people in Jacob’s home province of Limpopo have either no access to fresh water or must travel at least 200 metres to reach it. Limpopo’s Department of Agriculture estimates it will need at least 1,000 boreholes every year to keep up with demand, ensuring Borameetse plenty of future work.
